Who are Desert Pea?
We are a unique indigenous media organisation based in NSW and operating in Aboriginal communities around Australia since 2002. Our organisation is known as an innovator of sustainable cultural development programs, maintaining a strong network of community and family relationships with indigenous communities and organisations around the country. Our programs have focused social & cultural objectives. This combined with our high-end media outcomes make our process unique in the industry.
The current social and political climate in Northwest NSW paves the way for a strong focus on indigenous cultural and community partnerships. Desert Pea Media recognises the capacity fro Desert Pea Media to facilitate and innovate those partnerships – in a culturally sensitive and sustainable way. We have a focus on creating a community – driven dialogue around local social issues, and advocating awareness and understanding of these issues within the local community.
About the Directors:
Toby Finlayson (Bathurst, NSW) has been working both nationally and internationally in marginalised and disadvantaged communities for more than 8 years. Toby trained in Thailand with acclaimed community theatre foundation ‘Makhampom’ (2001/2003), working in remote and disadvantaged communities and has also coordinated programs in Sri Lankan tsunami refugee camps (2005). He has since delivered innovative indigenous media programs with Desert Pea Media since its formation in 2002.
Matthew Priestley (Boggabilla, NSW) has a long history of working with both contemporary and traditional indigenous media. Matt was principal artist of CCD organisation ‘BigHart’ (1989-99) and AFI laureate for his short film ‘Hurt’ in 1991. acclaimed in both the indigenous and non-indigenous arts industry as a traditional and visual artist, he works across media platforms to communicate a powerful message of indigenous cultural sustainability and development.
